ABOUT US...

...IS REALLY ABOUT YOU.

Carolina Triathlon is built upon the belief that there is value to the athlete in being able to go to one shop and get everything you need for the sports of running, cycling, swimming, and doing triathlons.

I own both Carolina Triathlon locations, and I am a triathlete. I use the stuff we sell every day of the year. Triathlon has been one of the cornerstones of my life for seven years. Every week, I am a runner, a cyclist, and a swimmer. The store is committed to being the place you want to go to get the information, advice, and products you use in your daily sweat.

I did my first Ironman in Florida in 2003 and also have completed several Half Ironmans and a few dozen Sprint and Olympic distance races. Our store is the store I wish had been available when I began doing tris years ago, back when I still thought a brick was a building material.

Carolina Triathlon is a sponsor for the local triathlon club - the Upstate Triathlon Club. We also sponsor a number of local races and events, including the Freedom Rings races on September 11, the downtown 5K race, the Greenville Half Marathon in late October, the Tri to Cure kid’s triathlon in August and tons of other events.

All members of the Upstate Triathlon Club, the Greenville Spinners, the Spartanburg Freewheelers, the Greenville Track Club, and the Anderson Electric City Cycling Club receive membership discounts at our store. In addition, we sponsor the Land-Rover/Carolina Triathlon Cycling Team and the new Carolina Triathlon... triathlon team. (More details on that soon.)

Yours truly,

Randy McDougald

MEET THE TEAM(S):

The Woodruff Road team

Jaimie Church is one of the Upstate's most talented short course triathletes, and triathlon coaches. When he isn't coaching or training for his next race, Jaimie likes to help triathletes of all levels make educated decisions about equipment, nutrition and race tactics. Jaimie races for the Greer State Bank/Hincapie Sportswear Triathlon team.

Stacy Smith , a.k.a. "sunshine" is the latest corporate refugee to join our team of mistfits. Aside from being one of the fastest female inline speedskaters in the country (and a former bike racer), Stacy is also turning out to be a wicked-fast duathlete and triathlete. In her very first duathlon (Powerman Alabama 2006), she finished well under three hours and placed 3rd in her age-group.  She also recently won the US national tandem championship title. (Wow.) When she isn't racing or taking naps in the transition area, Stacy likes to laugh at our stupid jokes and challenge us to spitball duels.

Sideshow a.k.a. ... "Sideshow" is our resident hair stylist and all around master of all things running and cycling.  (Don't ask him to swim though.  He's a land critter through and through.)  Things we know about Sideshow: He can eat his weight in Subway sandwiches every day.  His phone-answering skills know no equal.  Things we don't know about Sideshow: How he earned that name.  You'll find Sideshow alternating between the Downtown and the Woodruff Rd. stores, so if you see him in two places on the same day, you aren't seing double.

Ron Hoffman a.k.a. "Mario" is in charge of a) all things relating to bike surgery, and b) moustache maintenance.  When Ron isn't building, fixing or tweaking bikes, he may be found performing 700cc tire massages or practicing ancient chyropractic kung-fu techniques on suspension forks.

Teresa Hrubala's profile - coming soon.

Ashley a.k.a. "Shop Dog" has been with Carolina Triathlon all her life. Although she can't ride a bike yet, her 1/28 mile track times are starting to drop fast, and the rest of the shop has already started turning up the heat to keep from getting dropped. (Can you say... shoe-in for a sponsorship?) Granted, she has two pairs of legs instead of two, and her aerodynamic profile gives her a slight advantage, but still. Next time you're in the store, listen for Ashley's little bell... and if she dares you to a sprint race, don't feel too bad if she puts you under the proverbial bus.

Mark Knights a.k.a. "Knight Rider" (okay... not really; David Hasselhoff was never this cool... except maybe circa 1986, when his perm was at its pinnacle) is our new master mechanic.   We have no idea how long he's been  wrenching, but we think it's probably been a really, really, really, really long time because he seems to know what he's doing.  In a past life, he was the team manager  for  the Occasionall Blues men and women's teams, a race promoter (15 races at last count), provided tech support for Collegiate Nationals stage races, and worked with Mavic, Cane Creek, and Shimano.  Identifying marks: A tatoo of a calf on his calf.  (Oh yeah.)

Aside from being the downtown store manager and one of the creative forces behind your shopping experience at Carolina Triathlon, Ben Schowe is a veteran runner with 15 years running and racing experience. He was 7-time varsity letterman at App State and has coached M.S., H.S. and collegiate cross country and track & field. (He's also an IFPA certified personal trainer.) Ben also enjoys cycling, but showering is as close to swimming as he'll get, so don't expect him to join the full-on triathlon experience just yet... Other tidbits of info: Ben hails from Lynchburg, VA, and enjoys drinking microbrew beers.

Tina Jensen is our resident Danish national champion (we're talking about Denmark here, not the sticky-sweet pastry), and one of the strongest female runners in South Carolina.  You will usually catch Tina at the downtown store on Saturdays, where she will be happy to answer any questions you might have regarding running, running gear, women-specific training, local races, and even viking history.  Tina's favorite color may or may not be turquoise, and the correct pronounciation of her last name is "Yensen".

Chris Harrigan a.k.a. "Phelps" is a wicked-fast swimmer. How fast? Well, rumor has it that on a good day and with the right training, he would beat Mike Phelps. Fact or fiction? Only time will tell.  In July of 2006, Chris became the first native South Carolinian to ever qualify for Nationals in the 50m, so we may find out before the year's over.  (Oh, and when you get a chance, ask him about his pool encounter with Mike Phelps - dubbed "the back it up" encounter.  Priceless.)
