I'm a 50 year old man re-discovering my love of cycling. I put on many miles in my younger days racing and touring. In the early to mid 80's raced frequently with italian chro-moly frames and components which were the top of the line at the time. I was leary about transitioning to a carbon bicycle as my heart and soul belonged to the elegant steel machines from my past. Recently purchased a Roubaix Comp Compact in "stealth fighter black" - wrestled a little with the cost but as I am in mid-life thought insignificant in comparison to a new motorcycle or sports car..and much better for my body and soul. This bike is unbelievable - Specialized has knocked it out of the park with this one. Without a doubt the fastest, smoothest, and most comfortable machine I have ever ridden. You don't corner this bicycle, you just think, and it is there effortlessly. The compact gearing, I was worried might be a little low, but not at all the case. In the last weeks of riding in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming, I was glad that the low end was available to me - nice to be able to keep the cadence up for my middle aged knees. I did upgrade the crank and brakes to ultregra as I wanted the consistency of a matching component group. However, the FSA crank and Axis brakes were very good. This bike is a dream machine and even better is that I see my cyclist body of the 80's returning to me in a hurry. This bike is worth every penny.. Thank-you Specialized!
I bought this to replace a good aluminum bike which I'd had for about 3 years and found that the aluminum bike would leave me battered and bruised after any longer rides (65 miles plus). I wanted to find something that ironed out that heinous road buzz that all road cyclists have to deal with but the road conditions in Sonoma County leave a little to be desired so I took a loaner from my LBS to try it out and was pretty much amazed. At first, I thought the Zertz inserts were just a marketing gimmick but I'm man enough to say I was wrong. No road bike can comfortably deal with pot holes but this bike glides over the cracked asphalt and concrete roads so smoothly it was hard to believe. Another great thing is I found my overall average speed increased by around 1.5 mph with the same level of effort, a very good thing. For its level of comfort you would normally expect a bike like this to be a bit of a wet sponge when it comes to getting the power down but this thing can move and fast. Getting out of the saddle to sprint gives no indication of the comfort value of the bike and I can easily keep up with my cycling buddies during a dash for that imaginary line. Also, it gives you supreme confidence when hammering downhill and into switchbacks and that it will hold its line, the only weakness I can see is the rider. So hats off to Specialized once again for producing this incredible machine that is an incredible all rounder.
Great bike for road work.
